Our new Summer series Soul In Cinema Cafe starts Thursday, June 11th at 7PM at Greenbrier Ridge Apartments Clubhouse. Soul In Cinema is best described as ‘the place to view & talk about the ways great movies answer the questions that matter most to us.”
At each meeting we will watch movie clips related to a specific topic and then open the floor for discussion. Further discussion of the topics will continue the following Sunday in our Hub meeting. Meeting dates are June 11th and 25th, July 9th and 23rd, August 6th and 20th. We will meet from 7-8:30pm at Greenbrier Ridge Clubhouse. Light refreshments will also be served.
Our topic for Thursday, June 11th is entitled “Oops, I Did It Again”, pondering the questions: Is there some good in every person, or are some people beyond redemption? Should we try to make up for past moral failures, or just make a fresh start? How, if ever, are wrongs made right?
Future topics (subject to change) include:
Forgiving When There’s No Forgetting (June 25)
Should we make people pay for wrong they do to us, or is it better to forgive and forget? What distinguishes justice from revenge? What distinguishes mercy from cowardice? To err is certainly human, but is to forgive divine?
Freedom and Fate (July 9)
Are some people destined for greatness while others are doomed to lives of quiet desperation? Or is it “If you can dream it, you can be it”? Are lovers meant for each other, or are they just ships crossing in the night? Are we responsible for our actions? Who (or what) ultimately determines the outcome and meaning of our lives?
Only Human After All (July 23)
Are we noble beings on a journey to discover our true potential? Or is it our flaws that make us human? Is there a unique human spirit, or are we just advanced biological machines? What does it mean to be human? What makes us human, and is it possible to lose that?
Angels and Demons (August 6)
If there is a God, would he be an old man dressed in white, sitting on the clouds? And if there is a Devil, would he have horns and a pitchfork? Would angels look like lost loved ones and kindly strangers, and would demons look like scaly monsters? How do our own hopes and fears affect our picture of spiritual beings?
Happily Forever After? (August 20)
Is death the end or just another beginning? Would an afterlife be a blessing or a curse? Would we retain our identity or become something else? How we would we view our former earthly life, and those we knew there? How does the way we live reveal our beliefs about death?
